Budget Woes = No Pay For You!
It’s a terrible time for our states out there. Many of them have a July-June fiscal year, and without tax revenues due
to the crashing economy, they have new budgets coming into play that are slashed and / or unable to be set due to conflicting priorities.
CNN Money reports that Pennsylvania state workers (69,000 of them…and our legislators in Idaho think WE have a bloated bureaucratic labor force?) have gone without pay for any work done in July. They got a partial check for work performed in June…then nothing…just an IOU. And they won’t get interest on the lost pay when they finally DO get it.
California paid its workers (after making them take mandatory Fridays off without pay) but then blew off the contractors and vendors.
It’s just bad news all over. And with the talk of the 2nd stimulus package, I’m starting to get worried about whether the first one did enough to merit yet another.
Are you worried about your job? Your future?

State employees in Idaho have some budget woes, still. There’s a mandatory 4 day furlough (days off without pay) that must be taken in the current fiscal year.
My husband has mandatory furlough days, he works for a local media station. So it’s in private industry, too.
I hope it picks up, soon.
I am a little concerned, although there are some signs of health. I know a few realtors who say they are selling houses again, after a long slowdown. That seems positive.
Homes sales are going in fits and starts. For the 5 counties in SE Idaho, the first half of 2009 had 27% fewer homes sold compared to the same time period in 2008. While it’s not as bad as other areas of the country, it’s still a pretty big ouch for this corner of the state.
That’s a huge drop. I agree with you, it’s a pretty big ouch.
I have a friend in Arizona, a tenured professor, who just got his salary cut $11,000. He’s close to retirement, so he had to take the hit with no complaint.
I know lots of us who are worrying. I’m losing $1300/month starting in September and that’s gonna hurt…but not as much as losing employment or taking a huge paycut at my job.
